Russian Language: The First Step to a Russian Education

In Africa, RUDN is building more than standalone language courses: it is creating infrastructure that connects schools and universities with Russian education.

DR Congo

Russian is now a compulsory part of the university curriculum.

Since the 2025/2026 academic year, Russian has been part of the first-year curriculum for all majors at the Free University of Kinshasa. This covers 14 study groups and 280 students, with teaching organized with the participation of RUDN Institute of Russian Language. Niger

In April 2024, with the support of the Russian Government, RUDN opened the Russkoe Prostranstvo (Russian Space) Center for Russian Language and Culture in Niamey. The first classes were held for students of Abdou Moumouni University.

Since opening, the Center has been running regular activities: Russian language courses and practical classes for students, methodology workshops for teachers of Russian as a foreign language, and career guidance and outreach programs.

In 2025, intensive Russian courses were launched and the “Discovering Russia” competition was held for talented young people; its winners attended the winter school of RUDN Institute of Russian Language. Representatives of Abdou Moumouni University also took part in RUDN educational events in Moscow.

Mali

In Mali, RUDN is developing cooperation to promote the Russian language and Russian culture. The aim is to spark interest in learning Russian, introduce Russian traditions and history, and inform young people about opportunities to study at Russian universities.

A key role is played by the Russkoe Prostranstvo (Russian Space) centers for Russian language and culture, which bring together educational, cultural and outreach initiatives.

Classes help students build language skills, learn about Russian culture and get a clear idea of further study in Russia.

Since 2024, more than 170 people have studied Russian through this program. Classes and outreach events are laying the groundwork for closer educational ties between Mali and Russia and building interest in Russian education.

Nigeria

RUDN is working with Bethel International School on teaching Russian as a foreign language and introducing students to Russian culture. The cooperation aims to support teachers, improve teaching methods and expand opportunities to learn Russian.

The partnership includes professional development programs for teachers of Russian as a foreign language, as well as online lectures and master classes in Russian. These initiatives support the exchange of teaching experience, build interest in the Russian language and culture, and strengthen educational ties between Russia and Nigeria.

Language is becoming part of RUDN’s educational infrastructure in Africa.
